Video: Chuck Jones

Videos

The artist evolves. This is a central theme for all professions, but in the context of creative arts it comes down to spending time with the world and seeing the things that you can interpret in a different light. Looney Toons still makes me laugh and today’s video pulls back the curtain on the magic of Chuck Jones in these cartoons that continue to hold up against the test of time.

Every 1st of the month I post a video relating to art, design, or creativity so come back and see what’s new.

Video: Space Inspires

Videos

There has been a lot of space adventures recently (Gravity, Interstellar) so I’m feeling a little inspired by space exploration. This month’s video comes to me from some friends (2014) who I think share that sense of wonder that will drive humanity to the stars. That grand dream may be more inspirational than any typography poster advice, reaching across all borders, religions, and political affiliation. What does it inspire in you?

Every month I share videos about graphic design, illustration, or print. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Video: An Englishman Talks About Cowboys

Videos

Brian Eno is a musician from way back who’s worked with dudes like David Bowie, U2, Coldplay and other big names. He’s also a painter with a minimalist bent. In today’s First Watch Eno talks about what creativity is and how it’s used with some really great pointers about perfection, nurturing innovation, and being ready.

If you or your degenerate friends have any videos to share about creativity, cowboys, or graphic arts, let me know and I’ll post it here on the first of the month – somewhere down the road.

Video: Starting As A Creative

Videos

First of the month means First Watch, that time when you get to see videos about graphic arts. Today’s video is not about graphic art exactly, but about the creative process when starting out. Ira Glass is a phenomenal story teller for This American Life. I highly recommend this show if you are not already addicted.

I’ve heard this interview before, but the video is fun to watch and Ira’s words are very inspiring so eff it. Enjoy!

As always submit your graphic arts video in the comments below, on Twitter, or Facebook.

Video: Gig Poster Glimpse

Videos

First Watch is back for the that graphic arts video you can’t live without. Today’s video is not a complete story so much as a trailer. I few years ago I stumbled on a move called, ” Just Like Being There”, about screen printed art in the music world. This is one part of a long line of inspiration that has thrown me into the universe of screen printing mania that is driving me into attempting my hand at printing.

This is also where a lot of really talented artist have come from with heavy influence on today’s graphic world. If you get a chance, grab a craft beer and pop-on Netflix to nerd-it-up with some talented artists.

Remember, every month is a new video so please send me you recommendations. As long as it’s related to graphic arts (especially craft or illustration), I’ll be happy to show it here.

Video: Digital Illustration, Dutch Style

Videos
[vimeo http://vimeo.com/68048661]

First of the month means First Watch and today we have a process video (recording of the artist working at twice the speed). As you may know I love process videos because you can learn from other artists, but my entire life people have been looking over my shoulder to see what I’m creating – we are all simply excited about the creative process!

Lois van Baarle is the Dutch artist behind the scenes and you can find her at Loish.net.

If you have a video suggestion for First Watch let me know!

Video: Human Communication

Videos

This month’s First Watch brings you Typographer and Graphic Designer Erik Spiekermann. He’s been making the rounds online at the time of this writing, but goes back to that essence of communication. If I ever get up the nerve to redesign governments forms there could be a good market there… and if you use this idea all I ask for is a finder’s fee of 5%.

Every month on the first new videos are posted here covering graphics arts. Please share any videos you may have.

Video: The Human Element

Videos
[vimeo http://vimeo.com/98330466]

First Watch back again with a segment from The Creative Class Series featuring graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister of New York based Sagmeister & Walsh. I totally agree with his sentiment about taking machines out of the equation. Let’s have more human interactions. See the humanity in the things we create.

Then again, without the tools that I’m using right now I wouldn’t be here talking to you, showing my creations. What do you think?

The first of every month I post new videos about graphic arts. If you have any suggestions for videos please let me know!

James White’s Character Illustrations: Start to Finish

1st of the month means 1st Watch! Videos that explore illustration, graphic design, print and other media.

Today we have James White brought to you by Lynda.com. Don’t know who James White is and I’m not sure what Lynda is all about, but I’m going to look into it. Anyway this one is probably more for the illustration geeks out there, however if you’re curious about how much thought your designer is putting into her work, this will give you a good snap shot of what it takes to make an image.

Always looking for new videos so please send me cool stuff that you find related to print, graphic design, or illustration.

Video: Wicked Wolf

Feature

Hydro74

It’s the 1st of the month. That means 1st Watch is back with some wicked illustration process reel.

My wife turned me on to Hydro 74 a while back and I really love his style. The self proclaimed purveyor of sin has made a name for himself as an illustrator of all things bad ass. If you like what you see you should check out his site: Hydro74.com.

Process videos are great for people like me to see how other illustrators do the deed, but I think you’ll like the inside look at what goes into this phenomenal art.

Every month I try to come up with cool videos so if you have any suggestions, let me know.
